How to choose a custom signet ring: 10 things to decide

Choose your metal and budget

We offer two customizable rings so you can match the metal to how you wear it:

• Custom Ring ($199.90): Crafted from durable titanium steel with PVD finish for gold options (silver, yellow gold or rose gold finish). Scratch-resistant, waterproof, and will not tarnish or turn your finger green.
• Solid Silver & Solid Gold Custom Ring (from $469): Cast in solid 925 sterling silver (from $469) or solid 8K (from $2,950), 14K (from $4,450) or 18K (from $6,950) gold in yellow, white or rose gold. Stamped with an industry-standard hallmark that any local jeweler can verify, and resizable by any jeweler.

Pick your face shape: Oval, Round or Cushion

Oval is the classic traditional signet silhouette, well-suited to vertical family crests and coats of arms. Cushion (rounded square) frames shields, monograms and badges with balanced corners. Round gives circular seals, emblems and wax-seal designs even symmetry around the perimeter.

Pick your face size in millimeters (not your ring size)

Small, Medium, Large, X-Large and XX-Large describe the diameter of the top engraving face in millimeters — they are not your finger's ring size:

• Custom Ring (Titanium Steel): Small is 16 mm (0.63 in), Medium is 24 mm (0.95 in), and Large is 30 mm (1.18 in).
• Solid Silver & Solid Gold Custom Ring: Small is 12 mm (0.48 in), Medium is 15 mm (0.60 in), Large is 18 mm (0.70 in), X-Large is 21 mm (0.82 in), and XX-Large is 24 mm (0.95 in).

For a subtle pinky ring or slender fingers, Small or Medium sits cleanly; for intricate coats of arms or a bold statement on the ring or index finger, Large (or X-Large / XX-Large in precious metal) gives maximum detail.

Select your US ring size (US 4 to US 18 in half sizes)

In a separate step of the customizer, choose your finger's ring size from US 4 to US 18, including half sizes (4, 4.5, 5 … up to 18). Not sure of your size yet? Choose your engraving style: Raised, Recessed or Wax Seal

• 3D Relief (Raised): The background is carved away so your crest or emblem stands out in raised dimensional relief.
• 2D Flat (Recessed): Your artwork is deeply engraved into the flat polished face for a crisp, classic silhouette.
• Wax Seal (Mirror-Image): Deeply engraved in reverse (mirror image) so that pressing the ring into hot sealing wax leaves a sharp, readable impression.

Upload any image file — a family crest, coat of arms, monogram, initials, company or club logo, sketch, or phone photo of an heirloom ring. Even low-resolution images work: our artists redraw and prepare every design for deep engraving at no extra cost. If you need help finding your family crest, contact us and we will look it up or recreate it from your description.

Decide on black inlay vs. plain polish

Black inlay fills the recessed background around your raised design with a durable dark contrast that makes fine heraldic lines stand out from across the room. Without black inlay leaves the entire ring in a uniform, understated precious-metal polish.

Add band patterns or shoulder side engravings (optional)

Keep the band smooth and mirror-polished, or add side engravings on the left and right shoulders (such as a family motto, year, or secondary emblem). On the Solid Silver & Solid Gold ring, you can also select overall hand-engraved band patterns: Royal, Dragonskin, or Treebark.

Add an inside band inscription (optional)

Personalize the inside of the band with up to 25 characters — a name, wedding or milestone date, initials, or short Latin motto engraved cleanly inside the shank.

• Timeline: Every ring is made to order. Most rings are crafted and shipped within 2 to 4 weeks.
• Shipping: Free standard shipping worldwide, with faster shipping options available at checkout.
• Design proof on request: Reply to your order confirmation e-mail within 2 hours of ordering to request a digital rendering; our team usually sends it within 24 hours and waits for your approval before crafting starts.
• Changes & cancellation: Because each ring is custom-made for you, orders can be modified within 2 hours or cancelled within 6 hours of ordering, before production begins.
